SOUL FOOD TO GO (feed your mind not just your stomach):

To my dear students:

First reaction to Typhoon Yolanda:  Thank God you weren’t affected.

Second reaction:  What can I do to help those who lost their homes and their loved ones?  Is it really that difficult for me to pledge at least one basic care package to the relief operations?

People - 025We see above a copy of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, a book he wrote as 10 separate scrolls during 335 BC to 323 BC.  Aristotle is perhaps the greatest philosopher of all time.  He has greatly influenced one of Catholicism’s greatest thinkers- St. Thomas Aquinas as well as being honored among Muslims as ‘The First Teacher.”

Aristotle believed in the pursuit of a “good life” which he defined as the life lived in virtue.  A person becomes truly happy when he or she strives to live the human values to the highest degree of perfection possible.

So the greatest rules in life have already been laid down for us some 2350 years ago.  And there should be no excuse for a person who chooses to ignore them.  Unfortunately in this increasingly fast-paced modern world, the happy person is idolized as the one with the most gadgets, the one with the most material wealth.

What are your ideals?  What do you value in life?

As André Gide (French author and winner of the Nobel prize for Literature in 1947) puts its: “Everything has been said before, but because nobody listens we have to keep going back and beginning all over again.”

being uniqueTo the left we see a “rock star” who does everything he can to stand out from the crowd and appear unique.

To the right we see a nerdy young man who, at the age of 15, began writing a book that would spend 21 weeks in the number 1 spot of the New York Times bestseller list.  He then went on writing a series of four books that would sell 33 million copies worldwide.  (He is also a self-taught blacksmith who can make his own chain mail armor.)

To the left we see a person busy with his image.

To the right we see a person who spends his time enriching his skills.

Who would you rather be?

This is an often used image to show that the fate of Earth (or Mother Nature) is in our hands.

I beg to disagree.

Earth will continue in its orbit round the Sun with or without us humans.  When we humans become too problematic, she (Mother Nature) will simply write us off the equation.  She is in fact beginning the process- abnormally strong rains and floods with heat waves in other parts of the globe.  These are signs that we should be able to read and understand if we want to continue living on this planet.

The fate of Earth is NOT in our hands.  Our fate is in our hands.  When will we realize that we have placed ourselves in the endangered species list?

After all, Earth is called the Blue Planet- not the Human Planet.  Let us all learn from Pixar’s WALL-E animated film- a movie that is very prophetic.

While it is true that a cluttered desk may mean a busy (and often productive) day, it may also mean a disorganized mind.  How cluttered is your desk?  Your room?  Your mind?

Something to keep in mind in your quest for perfection.

This is exactly what I tell myself whenever I meet parents who, for one reason or another, refuse to let their children join field trips.  Sure there are valid ones (medical mostly) but the majority is just plain paranoia.  Some would even ask me if I can assure their child’s safety.  And my reply?  “No, I cannot.  But you can be dang sure I’ll do my best.”  =).

Let me share the game plan we have for our 3.6 yr-old son, Ico.  We agreed that I could take him, when he’s 5 yrs old, to mountains, to rivers, to lakes, to oceans and to waterfalls.  And if and when he gets wounded or sick, I take him home to his mom.  Good thing she’s a doc, hehe.  =)

Our school motto “Better People, Better Earth” is just talk unless it becomes “Better Person, Better Earth.”  What have you done to become a better person this past hour?
